What's the difference between Yoga and just plain stretching and normal exercise?
Traditional exercise is goal oriented: How many push ups can I do? Can I touch my toes? I'm going to
do 10 more crunches today than I did yesterday. Yoga, by contrast, is a process. The idea is to focus
your awareness on what you are doing and how you feel as you do the postures. Some of the postures in yoga
may be similar to those you have done in exercise classes. In Yoga, you learn to breath as you stretch and move.
Using your breath, these familiar moves will come more easily and will be much more relaxing.
Common myths:
- I’m not flexible enough to do yoga.
Yoga builds flexibility but you do not need to be flexible to get started. Every pose can be adapted to
your current agility.
- I tried doing yoga and it was really hard. I hurt for days!
Yoga classes range tremendously in terms of their level of challenge. It is important that you choose a
class that is suitable for your experience and level of fitness. Yoga will awaken muscles that you may not be
using regularly. We highly recommend that beginners start with Yoga Basics. In our small classes, you will
learn how to adapt each pose for your body so you leave feeling stretched but not sore.
- I don’t want to stand on my head.
Headstand and the other full inversions are advanced postures that will not be introduced until you have a
significant amount of experience with yoga. You will never be pressured to do any postures that you are
uncomfortable doing.
